Lessons of the Fall

In the summer of '67, can you still recall that day?
It was the birth of our new nation on the hills of Monterey.
From the heart of our new vision, we could barely see at all-
We were just beginning Lessons of the Fall.

With the innocence of children, all the freaky flags unfurled,
We had peace and love and music, proper tools to change the world.
But the planet kept on turnin', ever close to curtain call-
Can we still remember Lessons of the Fall?

We would dream about what we'd achieve
By wearing hearts upon our sleeve,
A world where everything was right and fair.
But slowly as our lives moved on,
This summer love would soon be gone,
How could we know our fall was in the air?

Then the rush to join humanity, the rise to high society,
And the thrill of breathing richer atmosphere.
Now we're in the sweeter neighborhood,
And though the living here is good,
We gave away some things we held so dear.

Now our children all are growing, and our time is running fast.
Do they ever hear the music from your far and fading past?
Did you ever hope to teach them of the love you felt for all?
Have they ever heard the Lessons of the Fall?
Can they ever learn The Lessons of the Fall?
